Dear Reader,
Welcome to my Weebly Portfolio! Here you will find a few pieces of writing that I have completed over the course of my Junior year in AP English 11. As described in my Writing Philosophy Discussion, I have grown in many ways this year and even with the room for improvement, I'm thrilled for my progress. I started out as a timid, terrified writer and grew into an excited and open one, extatic with each new opportunity to write. In this portfolio you will find some of my best pieces ranging from a pre-test I took in September, to a speech I gave at the end of this year.
1. Writing Philosophy Discussion. In this piece I described to changes I have undergone throughout this year and my growth. I also incorporated my take on three articles written by professional and applied their knowledge and suggestions to my own writing. This piece exemplefies my love for writing and how much I am intrigued by each new passage I read and how much I want to improve my writing.
2. The VBCPS Pretest AP Writing Prompt. I completed this prompt in September of 2012, the beginning of this year. In this prompts, I discussed the controversy of offering incentives for charitable acts. From my personal experiences from mission trips with my church over the summer, I was able to argure the point that offering incentives for charitable acts should be allowed because it exposes those blind to the acts to charitable work and how great it is.
3. College Essay Collage. This assignment was a collage used to spark ideas for a college essay. I was thrilled to do this because I love art and I love tieing a whole bunch of different things in with my life to a piece. In creating this collage I found and recognized the significant items and events that have impacted my life.
4. Collage Discussion. In this piece, I described each individual item on my collage and what it ment to me. I thouroughly enjoyed doing this because it was creative writing about certain impactful events that I was able to share with others. I loved desbribing each idividual iteam and showing each significance to my life.
5. College Essay. This essay I created based on an experience I had on a summer mission trip in Vacherie, Louisiana. I was most proud of their piece because I never thought I could compose just a descriptive college essay and it gave me confidence entering into my senior year.
6. College Essay Reflection. In this piece, I discussed the changes that I made to my college essay over the four drafts. This shows my growth and how I have learned different techniques to implement into literary devices such as my grammatical structure and diction.
7. Argument AP Essay Prompt. In this piece I responded to a claim made by Thomas Paine, a supporter of American civilization and way of life. I do not entirely agree with him partly because I feel that he is very shaded towards American society. I countered his claim by states some of the negative things in American society and how they impact the nation.
8. Synthesis AP Essay Prompt. In this piece I disscussed the effect modern technology has on presidential campaigns and whether it is positive or negative. I argued that it was a positive effect on society because it allows the nation to see their candidate and how he/she holds themselves and presents themselves to the public.
9. Rhetorical Analysis AP Essay Prompt. In this prompt, I analyzed the metaphors, sentence structures, and imagery used in a piece by John Updike. I took different parts of the piece and broke them down to uncover the meaning each one held and expose the symbolism.
10. Persuasive/Argumentative Research Paper. This piece I wrote about Battered Women Syndrome. I argued the point that women who have killed thier abusive partners should be elligable for lee-way in court. In this paper, I included research and opinions from myself and professionals involved in this topic. I didn't have a personal connection to the topic until I wrote this paper and started caring about the cause.
11. Speech. This piece was what I presented to the class, based off of my research paper. In changing the paper to the speech, I was able to use direct pronouns towards my audience and have a more casual tone than in the paper. When I delivered this speech, I was able to add emotions and facial expressions to help add effect to the presentation.
12. Reading Journal Excerpt. I chose an excerpt from the "Their Eyes Were Watching God" part of my reading journal. I loved this book and all of its messages it had hidden inside each sentence. I enjoyed the book so much primarily because of the progression the main character went through and what she discovered about herself in the end.
13. Selected Role Journal. In this assignment, we had to choose a role involved with the Vietnam war. I chose to be a songwriter. In doing so, I was able to read journal entries from many soldiers about the impact the music had on them during the war. Music inspired them just enough to keep up their hopes and maintain the sanity as much as possible. I was touched by each of their entries and was thrilled to discover more about the impact music had on them all.
14. Journal Excerpts from Webquest. This assignment had all of us (students) look through a website primarily based on the Vietnam War. We were able to read different journals, and stories from soldiers in the war. There were also biographys of civilians that were effected and people here in the United States. I did five summary write-up's to highlight the major journals I found that impacted me the most.
